Allie Vandermolen, Grant Community School – Building Community Through Music
Meet Allie Vandermolen
At Grant Community School, community is not only in the name, but is deeply embedded into the culture of being a Grizzly.
In an effort to bring families and students together in a fun, active and memorable way, Grant Community School Music Teacher Allie Vandermolen created Family Folk Dance Night. During this event, students partnered with their peers and their families to teach dances from several different cultures. This event resulted in laughter, community and true joy for the both children and adults alike.
I love Grant Community School, it’s so special to me. It was the very first school I worked at and it is now my sixth year. All of the students at this school have now gone through the music program with me. We have such a unique opportunity with our school’s dual language program that our families want to be involved, and they want to to do things to help.

Allie’s dedication to community shined bright as the gym was packed with students and families enjoying dances from many of the different cultures represented by the school. Grant Community School is a vibrant school community and is home to the district’s very first dual-language program.
It’s not just one culture or two languages, but really there’s so many different cultures represented by our students and their families. This event in particular, really bring that out and gives other cultures a chance to shine and just feel that pride with seeing a familiar dance represented.
